Scrolling Smarter: How to Make Social Media Work For You, Not Against You

We’ve all been there: You pick up your phone for “just a minute,” and suddenly you’re 45 minutes deep into a doomscroll spiral wondering why you feel anxious, overstimulated, and somehow worse than when you started. Social media and technology aren’t going anywhere, so instead of trying to quit cold turkey (which, let’s be honest, isn’t realistic for most of us), it’s time to learn how to make your feed a little friendlier to your mental health by adopting some smart scrolling.

Curate Your Feed

The best part about social media? You control who and what you follow. Unfollow accounts that make you feel bad about yourself, stress you out, or fill your feed with negativity. Instead, start following accounts that leave you feeling inspired, informed, or understood—think mental health resources, uplifting content, or simply pages that make you laugh. Your smart scrolling time will instantly feel less draining.

Set Boundaries (With Your Phone)

Just like you wouldn’t binge-watch 10 hours of reality TV every single day, it’s helpful to set some smart scrolling limits with your screen time. Most phones let you set app time limits so you can keep your scrolling habits in check. If you’re not ready to limit your time, start by carving out intentional “scroll-free” blocks of time, like the first hour after you wake up or right before bed.

Train Your Algorithm

Your “For You” page or suggested content is built off what you engage with. If you’re tired of being fed content that stresses you out, start clicking “not interested” when something pops up that you don’t want to see. Engage more with the positive, helpful, or lighthearted content you do enjoy. Over time, you’ll notice your feed will start picking up on your smart scrolling and become a lot more aligned with what makes you feel good.

Small Changes, Big Difference

Small shifts like curating your feed, setting boundaries, and training your algorithm can help you reclaim your scroll time and make social media a tool that supports your well-being rather than drains it.

Smart Scrolling.  After all, it’s your feed. Make it work for you.
